REGISTERED charities will have the chance to secure grants of up to £10,000 thanks to The Gannett Foundation.

Each year the foundation, which supports charitable projects across the UK in the regions covered by Newsquest newspapers, awards grants of up to £10,000 to various charities.

A spokesperson for the foundation said: “We value projects that bring lasting benefits to communities served by our local newspapers and websites.

“While preference may be given to ideas which create a durable legacy for the community, we will consider single events or projects of limited duration that otherwise meet our criteria.

“We are able to join with other contributors to support elements of larger projects, though we prefer to be in a position of making a donation which will fund a project entirely or which constitutes the final instalment to complete a project.

“Decisions in respect of the value of the funding will be made by the trustees and based on the evidence submitted.”

All registered charities are encouraged to apply for the grants from the foundation, which is the charitable arm of Gannett Co Inc., the parent company of Newsquest Media Group.

The project supports charities with projects which tackle issues such as education and neighbourhood improvements, economic development, youth development, local-problem solving, assistance to disadvantaged or disabled people, environmental conservation and cultural enrichment.

The foundation will favour projects that demonstrate good planning, oversight and financial responsibility. Last year, Holgate Windmill, an iconic York building and community project, was awarded with a grant of £3,500 after applying through The Press.

They used the money to buy equipment which would enable the windmill to produce flour.

Other charities which have previously benefited from The Gannett Foundation awards include York Citizens Advice Bureau which was awarded £9,430 in 2011 to establish information hubs in two of York’s children’s centres.
